All people want is tough sentences, vigorous enforcement and a zero-tolerance approach. It’s not brain surgery. You could solve this problem overnight if you wanted.
Here’s my plan
1. Abolish the Human Rights Acts -it was well-intentioned but
flawed, and has been abused since the moment it was introduced.
2. Build more prisons. If we can afford to spend £10bn of public money on a sporting event in 5 years’ time then we can afford to start protecting our citizens. If necessary, raise taxes, but explain to the electorate that the extra is ring-fenced for law enforcement. It’s a vote winner.
3. Adopt minimum mandatory sentences, such as 5 years for carrying a knife, 15 years for carrying a gun, life means life.
4. Widely publicise actual sentences handed out, via posters and text message. Also send law enforcement agencies into schools and youth clubs to publicise sentences.
5. Prosecute every offence, no matter how small. It worked in New York and it’d work here.
